Can I use Pro Tools 8. Who can give me an answer. I copied all my music files to a portable external hard drive, but, iTunes will not read files from my external hard drive.
Recently, I bought an older Macbook as a 2nd unit in the bedroom I am often bedridden. I use it for playback of movies from an external hard drive without any problems. Is there a player that will read directly from the external hard drive? It would be so much better to be able to simply plug and play on one computer and unplug to then plug and play in another room on my other unit. Definitely believe that whicch you said. Youur favorite justification appearded to be on the net the easiest thing too be awzre of.
You managed to hit the nail upon the top as well as defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Have you ever considered creating an ebook or guest authoring on other blogs? I know my visitors would value your work. Amazing Tool!!
I appreciate your blog. Thanks for sharing this post. Hey does using a 64GB flash drive count as an external hard drive, and if so, should I be using it to store my sessions on? Hey does using a 64GB flash drive count as an external hard drive, and if so, is it a good idea to store sessions on it?
Why not transfer the plugins and link them to internal with symbolink? Because when we are recording the main ssd writing so needs to be very fast and at the same time load plug ins from external drive. Or even better link the audio folder from the project to external drive so it reads the audio files as well when is on mixing process. If recording maybe the audio folder on main ssd.

Graham Cochrane on September 12, at pm. Tom on September 15, at am. Currently I plan to have two separate gb SSD drives. Once you have completed the project, you could move the files to an external hard drive for storage, in which speed is irrelevant as its only holding data. Regular backing up to this external would also be ideal.
Is this understanding correct? Hi There, I have a 12 core 3. I have one internal drive only, a 4tb fusion drive. Hi, thanks for this article!! Just a quick question…my protools and all the plug-ins I have is installed on my gb ssd card.
The ssd is now full because I stored all my sessions and I also have some sessions stored on my I 1tb hard drive as well. But I purchased a owc usb 3 5Tb external drive. What is the best way to transfer all my sessions from the ssd and hard drive into my new storage drive without losing any audio files? I am going to leave pro tools in the ssd. Thanks in advance. When considering thunderbolt drives is there any reason I should steer away from a bus powered TB drive as opposed to one with its own power supply?
Thank you in advanced! Hi I hope you can help me out with a few questions. I am looking to start using the waves maserati plug ins very soon and dont want to keep running into this problem.
What are some things I could do to fix this issue. Would getting a bigger external hard drive fix this problem? Would that fix the problem? I appreciate your time and help. Nectar and Ozone can be quite processor hungry items indeed and with running a number of other things it can quickly cause your systems CPU to max out. The Maserati plugins are great, the amount of them you load up and use at one time will effect your systems performance however, as with any plug-ins. More RAM would be ideal however on your case it is limited, getting a higher speed hard drive may help your system in terms of reading audio and recording, as we speak about in this article, but may not benefit you so much in terms of CPU help with processing plug-ins.
My main bit of advice would be, if you have applied a plug-in and are happy with what it is doing for that bit of audio, then render that down to a new audio track and make the plugin inactive. Hope that makes sense, its a great way to help restricted systems when you no longer want to make tweaks to one plug-in in particular.
Thanks for the informative article. Internal, external or a 3rd drive just for plug ins? With 16GB ram on your system along with the strength of the SSD I would say you should be fine on installing the plug-ins to your main computer. Many thank for the swift reply.
So there would be no real benefit to installing plugins to a dedicated USB 3 external drive? Would it just be overkill in this case? As always I do recommend that if you have programmed your drums or whatever instrument and are happy with the sound, the bounce what you can down to audio tracks and then make the instrument tracks inactive to give you the most stable session possible.
Great article! I tried partitioning that drive off and saving there, but keep getting the error. My internal drive is a standard gb HD. Thanks for any advice! Thanks for the kind words! The thing with Native Instruments such as Kontakt is that they load all the samples for a given instrument into RAM to give to best performance, so as a start while the samples are stored on the USB drive they will still be pulled onto your systems resources.
The only thing I can think of off the top of my head which could help is that instruments such as Kontakt feature a button which will purge unused samples, but then again if you have a lot of these kind of instruments running that may not make too much difference. Hey I need some help picking an external hard drive to use I have a home studio where I basically record and do a quick mix before I send it of to professionals. Which type would best benefit me.
Also I have Superior Drummer 2. In general It will be a good DAW to produce music? Thanks in advance! The LaCie Thunderbolt drive would be perfect for that kind of work and you may have even noticed on their website that they state that Pro Tools will work well with it as well. I would say running Pro Tools from your internal drive and then using that external to record and playback from would be a great setup indeed!
What I can say is that a plug-in of that kind involves lots of samples being read quickly so can be very processor hungry etc. Just a quick question on this. I recently purchased a MacBook pro using Mavericks and will be using it for audio recording.
I wish to purchase an external ssd not hybrid that will work with this Mac. Just confused on whether it should be sata or esata, does it matter? I believe esata is faster. It has a 2. I have heard different takes on where I should be saving the files to and where I should be running the session from. The HDD you mention running at rpm will happily transfer both audio material as well as running the software itself, but for very top performance it is best to have a dedicated drive that handles running the software and another to handle the reading and writing of the sound, and if you can have them both doing that at a good speed then you are on to a winner.
Hi there I am in a struggle at the moment for which option of dedicated external recording device to opt for. There are currently many options out there, here are a few examples:. I was wondering what kind of storage solutions you are using and why since you are all working in different audio segments.
For example:. So as Steve asked what we all use we are all going to explain what are storage and backup solutions we have in place and whether we have any plans to improve them in place. Each team member is going to provide a detailed look at their storage solutions, how they are configured and why they have chosen what they have chosen. Let's start with my setup I have had a succession of Mac tower machines going back to G3 and G4 towers before moving onto the Intel Mac Pro machines.
I tell you this because the Mac Pro machines have bays for internal storage and in my 4 bays I have the following In this chassis I have the following I am planning to take out both of the Seagate 1. In earlier times I had a two slot Kingston Technology removable caddy chassis into which I could swap drives connected to my computer using Firewire So I used to have two 'working drives' for my current and recent work, spread across both drives as well as a shelf full of storage drives.
When using drives as archive storage devices, parking them on the shelf can have its problems. If the drives are not spinning the bearings can become sticky so they when you put them back in they don't spin up, and if a drive doesn't spin you cannot get the data off it and your archive is lost.
This was the major driver for me to get a large drive and then consolidate the shelf full of archive drives onto one drive that I can keep spinning. It also makes it a lot easier to put up any archive sessions too, as the drive is always connected to my system. I am replacing my drives with Enterprise class drives, because they have a longer life span.
There was a time when Seagate Barracuda drives had a 5 year warranty, not anymore. I believe that the manufacturer's warranty period is a good indication to the expected life span of a drive and I have seen the warranty period come down on Seagate drives hence my move to enterprise class drives.
